The Human Papillomavirus (HPV)

The human papillomavirus which is more commonly referred to as the HPV, produces an infection in the mucous membranes. While most forms of the virus produce no visible signs or symptoms, some forms can produce warts and very rarely, produce some forms of cancer including cancer of the vagina, vulva, cervix, and anus in women.

It can also cause certain forms of anal and penile cancers in men. The virus is most commonly transmitted through sexual intercourse and so a condom is always advised when not in a monogamous relationship. It should be noted however, that exposed skin can also transmit the virus.

There are a number of vaccines available on the market which claim to help prevent infection. The important counter-measure to the virus is to have regular medical check-ups with a healthcare practitioner.
